25 years on from Vintage Crop’s historic Melbourne Cup win

It has been 25 years since Vintage Crop won the Melbourne Cup, the first international horse to do so.

In the middle of its whirlwind tour, the Melbourne Cup is currently being showcased across Ireland and the UK, honoring the British-bred Irish-trained Thoroughbred.

Amanda Elliott, Chairman of the Victoria Racing Club says Vintage Crop is a hero in Ireland and Australia, having a huge impact on the Melbourne Cup.

“He changed the race forever , and since then they have been coming thick and fast,” Elliott told Afternoons.

“Quarantine regulations changed which allowed the horses to spend half their quarantine in their country and half in Australia.”

This year the Melbourne Cup is visiting a record 37 destinations before taking center stage at Flemington in November.

And there is one guest Elliott hopes makes it to the Spring Carnival…

“We are hoping that Dermot [Weld] will join us at the Cup this year.”
