“A game changer” Ian Kiernan remembered

Round-the-world sailor, Clean Up Australia founder and former Australian of the Year Ian Kiernan has died at the age of 78. He was diagnosed with cancer in July.

A man who knew Ian well was fellow sailor David Pescud. David founded Sailors with disABILITIES that Ian was a patron of, and they were both Directors for Friends of Sydney Harbour.

Mr Pescud shared his memories of Ian with Macquarie Sports Radio, “He was just one of the blokes, you could sit down and have a really serious argument with… and at the end of the day say, OK it’s your shout, he was that kind of person, refreshing I found.”

David acknowledged that he will be remembered as a world-leading environmentalist, “He stayed focused and that was demonstrated in Clean Up Australia, you don’t get that, that success, that engagement, that’s a game changer, it really was.”
