A-League expansion D-Day, “The A-League needs South Melbourne”

With the A-League expansion bids about to hit D-Day, the final bidders are driving hard to the finish line to join the top tier A-League. 6 bids are in the running and one which has a deep history in Australian football roots is South Melbourne.

Founded in 1959 and winners of 4 NSL premierships South Melbourne Football Club are a club proud in history and with the trophies to back their bid.

South Melbourne Football Club Chairman Bill Papastergiadis joins Night’s host Julian King to discuss and share why the Lakeside club bid is the strongest.

With the announcement on the horizon Bill says he is, “calm” and that he is, ‘not at all’ worried on the press reporting that the West Melbourne and MacArthur South West Sydney bids are the running favorites, believing the rich history and reach of the club will be a key factor in their bid.

“We represent the South and South East of Melbourne, with over 50 clubs now that are in support of our club. (We) have arguable the biggest fan base outside of the A-league, incomparable to most of the A-League clubs.”

Bill states the clubs importance to growing the face of football in Australia is large with examples, such as setting up the, “Australia-China Foundation, where we brought Super League clubs from China to play against South Melbourne this year” making the clubs contributions to the national scene invaluable.

Talking on the issue of an established club versus new club Bill said their bid means they are, “the only club that will offer a full and complete stadium… we will provide the full match day experience.”

The FFA meeting is due Wednesday (11/12/18) where a definitive decision on the next 2 clubs to join the A-League could be made and when they would join.
