Sydney FC and Adelaide United finish at a stalemate in A-League opener

Adelaide United and Sydney FC have finished at 1-1 in the first match of the 2018/19 A-League season.

It was a tight, yet rusty performance from both sides with Adelaide dominating the early parts of the clash, before the Sky Blues stormed back into it late in the second half.

The opening goal went the way of Scott Galloway in the second and last minute of injury time as he caught Sydney goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne off his line to give the Reds the lead.

Sydney import Adam Le Fondre then equalised with a lovely finish off a ball from Milos Ninkovic in the 78th minute.

There were a couple of chances late for both sides as they searched for a winner, but no team really threatened the opposition’s goal.

Sydney dominated possession but it was played mostly in their own half, although both sides had three shots on target apiece.

In his first game A-League game since taking over Graham Arnold as coach, Steve Corica will be focusing on his side’s discipline after they conceded four yellow cards throughout the match.

The draw will be a precursor for the two sides to face off again in the FFA Cup final at the same venue on Tuesday, October 30.

The Sky Blues were missing young stars Danny De Silva as well as Trent Buhagiar who tore his ACL at training earlier this week.

They also looked a different side to the record-breaking one of recent seasons with the likes of coach Graham Arnold, Bobo and Adrian Mierzejewski all having departed.

Adelaide play Newcastle on Friday in round two, while it will be a Sydney derby clash for the Sky Blues as they host the Wanderers one day later.
