AFL Brownlow Medal 2018: Gillon McLachlan names his contenders

AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan has named his contenders for the 2018 AFL Brownlow Medal.

As the boss of the AFL prepares to read out his 3, 2, 1’s for this year’s count, he put forward a couple of favourites who could take Charlie home.

Tom Mitchell is considered to be the overwhelming favourite, while the likes of Max Gawn, Patrick Cripps and the 2017 Brownlow winner Dustin Martin are all expected to poll well.

Macquarie Sports Radio’s Shane McInnes caught up with McLachlan on the red carpet.

“I just hope it’s close,” McLachlan said.

“I know Tom Mitchell’s the strong favourite, but I reckon the ruckmen have had great years.

“(Patrick) Cripps has had a great year.

“There just seems to be a number of players who’ve had standout years.

“So hopefully it’s close and there’s a worthy winner.”

The Brownlow Medal count will begin at 7:30PM AEST on Monday at the Crown Casino in Melbourne.
