Andrew Gaze weighs in on AFL drugs scandal

The AFL is currently being rocked by two separate drug and sex scandals that involve current and former players

On the back of some leaked video footage of an AFL player snorting white powder, current Sydney Kings NBL star Andrew Bogut weighed in on the issue tweeting Hardly shocking news to see athletes in the news re: recreational drugs. Back in my “old days” of going to clubs I was offered a line every time I went out by very prominent people.”

Bogut’s coach at the Kings, Andrew Gaze, joined the Macquarie Sports Radio Breakfast show to discuss the scandal engulfing the AFL saying, It’s a huge issue. It’s really, really disappointing because there’s no doubt it’s a problem in society but usually we look to our athletes to set standards.”

Gaze explained why he thinks athletes are held to a higher standard than the rest of society, “The reason why we hold them so high is because of their achievements on the sporting fields, the way they take care of themselves, their dedication and commitment.”

Gaze was quick to point out that not all athletes partake in recreational drugs, “In fairness it’s a very small minority that go down this path but when they do it really makes the challenges of the rest of the community even more difficult because it sets an example to say ‘Well you know what, it isn’t that bad. It’s OK. Look there’s a superstar out there behaving in this way.’ It’s disappointing and we feel sorry for all concerned”
