Australia wins second T20 international to clinch series
Australia has beaten New Zealand by six wickets to seal victory in the three-game T20 international series.
After winning the opening game of the series at North Sydney Oval on Saturday night, the home side backed it up with a comfortable victory over the White Ferns at Allan Border Field in Brisbane.
But the Aussies didn’t have it all their own way, with New Zealand Opener Suzie Bates blasting 77 off 52 before being caught behind off the bowling of Perry.
Once Bates departed, Australia took control and conceded just 24 runs off the last five overs while taking another three wickets in the process.
Player of the match Megan Schutt starred for the Aussies, taking 3-15 off four overs and conceding just eight runs off her final 12 balls to restrict the tourists in the latter half of the innings.
Chasing 146 for victory, the home side rarely looked in any danger after losing Beth Mooney in the second over. Alyssa Healy (57 off 41) and Elyse Villani (50* off 39) steered their side to victory.
Ash Gardner was run out on 16 but it wasn’t without controversy as the third umpire’s long deliberation saw her given out despite replays suggesting New Zealand wicketkeeper Katey Martin had dislodged the bails with her hip, rather than glove.
But it didn’t trouble Australia as Elyse Villani and Rachael Haynes saw the Aussies home to clinch the series.
The third and final T20 international in the series takes place at Manuka Oval in Canberra on Friday night and you can hear every ball on Macquarie Sports Radio Cricket.
