Australian football fans ‘not connected’ to the A-League, says Simon Hill

Weekend Mornings

Football fans in Australia have not fully connected to the national league.

But veteran commentator Simon Hill says that connection is building.

Hill told Macquarie Sports Radio it takes time for clubs and the league to form the sort of identities the Premier League and its clubs have.

“We have not got a problem with the number of football fans in Australia,” he said.

“Our issue is they’re not connected well enough to the A-League yet.

“You do that, in part, by marquee (players), but it’s not about who wears the shirt. It’s the badge on it.

“Our league is only 13-14 years old. It’s a baby.”

Hill said the A-League is already outperforming most leagues in Asia in terms of exposure and attendance.
