Behind the scenes of Winx’s record breaking win

When a horse wins 26 straight races you start to run out of superlatives. But Winx’s part owner Debbie Kepitis has one: “Unbelievable”.

That’s how she described Winx’s win on Saturday in the race named after herself – the Group One Winx Stakes over 1400m at Royal Randwick.

Speaking to David Morrow and Tony Leonard on Macquarie Sports Radio Mornings, Kepitis admitted that even she had a little doubt before the win that saw the mighty mare win her 26th race in a row – breaking Black Caviar’s record.

“As they idled up, it was like oh golly does she actually have enough? Because this is such a short distance. Longer yes we know she can get there. But in her true style she knew where that winning post was and just went for home.”

And ominously we may not have seen Winx at her peak yet.

Kepitis said, “I don’t think we’ll ever see the best of her. She has to have… someone else take her on for her to get to that top speed”.
