Bill Lawry reflects on a marvellous career in cricket

MARKO & THE OX

Bill Lawry has hung up the microphone.

The legendary cricket commentator announced his retirement on Tuesday after more than 40 years in the role.

Bill reflected on his career with Marko and the Ox on Macquarie Sports Radio.

He said cricket coverage has come a long way since he started.

“When the ABC did it there were four cameras,” Bill said.

“All of a sudden we’ve got 15 cameras. It’s a great sports production.”

But while Bill says the modern game – particularly Twenty20 – are in good shape, he expressed some concerns about the state of cricket.

“I hope competitions like the Sheffield Shield don’t disappear,” he said.

“I couldn’t tell you the Victorian side now. Once I could tell you every player and their averages.”
