Change is coming to the AFL

Herald Sun AFL reporter Sam Landsberger has flagged “some change” would be made to the rules ahead of the 2019 season.

It emerged on Tuesday that the AFL held a secret trial with current Hawthorn players at Etihad Stadium, where a number of proposed rule changes were trialled behind closed doors.

“The AFL were very keen to keep this quiet,” he told Afternoons.

“Take it to the bank, they’ll be change for next year. There’s up to about 30 different changes to the rules they’re looking at.

“There’s looking at a raft of changes but the fact they were looking at starting position on Saturday was telling.

“My gut feel is if you’re going to bring in starting positions, you do it after every stoppage or not at all. If you only do it after every goal is kicked, you might as well not do it at all.”
