Macquarie Sports Radio Tennis expert Craig Gabriel says he was “surprised” by one Australian selection in their Fed Cup World Group play-off against the Netherlands.

Captain Alicia Molik opted to play veteran Sam Stosur in the opening singles rubber instead of world number 24 Daria Gavrilova, which Stosur lost to world number 210 Lesley Kerkhove in straight sets.

The decision ultimately didn’t cost Australia, who cruised to a 4-1 tie win over the Netherlands in Wollongong to re-join the World Group for the first time since 2015.

“I was glad Sam was back in the team but it took me by surprise,” Gabriel told Afternoons.
