Damien Oliver on top, but in the twilight of a great career

Damien Oliver is celebrating his ninth Scobie Breasley Medal as the best jockey in Victoria, but the champion hoop has told Julian King, it was a total surprise given his up-and-down 12 months that included several riding suspensions.

“The Spring carnival didn’t start off the best but the autumn carnival came good for me so it finished off well. It was a little bit of a shock of a result to win the Medal.”

The three-time Melbourne Cup winner got one up on his younger rivals by winning another Scobie Breasley, but he admits there won’t be too many more on the horizon.

“I’m certainly closer to the finish than the start. The other guys keep you young and the competition’s still strong so I really enjoy it.”
