Darren Berry lists two left-field captaincy contenders

Aaron Finch appears almost certain to captain Australia’s ODI tour of England in June, however, former domestic star Darren Berry says two other players should be considered.

The former Victorian and South Australian cricketer joined Tony Leonard and Jimmy Bartel on Wednesday.

He was asked if Finch was the natural choice to captain the side against England in June.

“It appears so, because of the fact that Cricket Australia have contracted Alex Carey from Adelaide,” Berry told Macquarie Sports Radio.

“For them to name two wicket keepers is quite rare these days.

“It appears to me that Alex Carey is going to be their short form keeper and Tim Paine will focus on Test cricket.”

While conceding Finch was favourite, Berry questioned whether selectors should look left-field.

“Do they go a bit bolder and give Travis Head the captaincy? He is captain of South Australia and the Strikers,” Berry said.

“Mitchell Marsh’s name has been thrown up, as well, to really look long term in the shorter version.”
