Giants in a good position for 2019
The first phase of the 2018/19 AFL pre-season is coming to a close drawing closer to Christmas and the GWS Giants are in “really good shape” according to co-captain Phil Davis.
GWS have made the Preliminary Final’s in 2016 and 2017 before losing to the eventual Premier, this year they reached the semi-finals losing to Collingwood by 10 points at the MCG.
During the trade period Dylan Shiel was traded to Essendon, Rory Lobb headed to Fremantle and Tom Scully returned to Victoria ending up at Hawthorn. Much has been said about the salary cap squeeze on the Giants but Davis see’s it all as a positive for the club. “There’s been an element of a cap squeeze for a while because we’ve been a good team. You look at all the good teams that play in the finals, generally there comes a time when players get squeezed out because they’re good players and that’s the situation we were in.” said Davis on Macquarie Sports Radio Breakfast with Matt Granland and James Willis.
“We as leaders get an opportunity to give our opinion on how things should pan out and what we think would be the best look for the footy club. They left with out blessing, but We were able to get really good draft picks and really set ourselves up in the draft. Not only have we picked up some good players this year and we’ve got a couple of picks to go next year as well, we’re in a strong position and I’m really confident our list is in a really good position.” said Davis
There’s an air of confidence around the Giants who will be aiming for a 4th straight finals series in 2019 and Davis says the team is flying “It’s always a bit of a cliche at this time of year. We’re all going pretty well at the moment, it’s been a good block, the older blokes have been back for a couple of weeks. We feel like we’re in really good shape and in a good position for 2019.”
