Graham Annesley to make massive change to referee accountability in 2019

New Head of Football Graham Annesley has wasted no time in making his presence felt at NRL HQ

Speaking on the Macquarie Sports Radio breakfast show, Annesley touched on one of the more significant changes he plans on implementing for the 2019 season and beyond, “One of the things that I’ve spoken to Todd (Greenberg) about and that we’re going to introduce from Round 1 is a regular Monday media briefing. So no matter what happens over the weekend whether it be controversial or not them i’ll be fronting up on a Monday afternoon to answer any questions for the media about any matter that’s happened across the course of the weekend.”

Annesley has also been very vocal about his desire to keep leading referee Matt Cecchin in the game, having tried to convince him to stay on multiple occasions since stepping into the Head of Football role, “Well I’ve had a crack (At convincing Matt Cecchin to stay in the NRL). I’ve met with Matt a couple of times my appointment was announced. The most recent was probably about 3 or 4 weeks ago.”

“I think it’s a long shot. I think Matt has resigned himself to the fact that he’s running out of steam and he’s looking forward to moving on with other things in his life. He does want to travel and I think there is some interest in him refereeing overseas.”

Annesley continued, “I’ve told him in no uncertain terms that i’d like him to stay and that the door is always open and all he has to do is tell me that and he’s back on board. But i’m not holding out great hope based on the discussions I’ve had with him.”
