GWS to trial ‘smart guernseys’ with tickets stitched inside

New technology could see fans of the future leave their plastic membership cards at home.

At Saturday afternoon’s Sydney Derby, 100 GWS members will be wearing new ‘smart guernseys’ designed by Solos and XBlades.

Instead of waving the barcode beneath the scanner, a small tag stitched inside the jumper lining will count as their ticket of entry.

“This will allow our members to walk through the gate without having to take out their wallet and show a ticket, without having to have that member card in the lanyard,” Giants Chief Fan and Commercial Officer Ryan Kaveney told Macquarie Sports Radio‘s Cam Reddin.

Fans will also be sent special offers like cheaper food and drinks when they attend games in person, rather than watching from the couch at home.

“We can send them real-time contact, so when they enter the gates we know they are there, I can hit them with some special content,” Kaveney said.

Similar technology has already been rolled out across the NBA, NFL and various football competitions around the world.
