Having fun the key to success according to premiership defender

Richmond defender Nick Vlastuin says having fun has been a “massive part” of their recent success.

After winning the premiership last year, Richmond are flying at the top of the ladder this season ahead of their blockbuster showdown at a sold-out MCG against Collingwood on Saturday.

First-year player Jack Higgins was tasked with providing the laughs in the half time huddle against Sydney in Round 15, with the 24-year-old saying it was a prime example of the healthy culture at the club.

“It started after 2016 where most of us weren’t enjoying our footy,” Vlastuin said.

“You enjoy your time at the footy club more when you’ve got good mates there. It’s been a huge focus to build those relationships and those close connections so we enjoy eachother’s company.

“On game day, it’s going to be easier to help your teammates if you’ve got a closer connection with them.”

When quizzed on what advice he’d give to players at less successful clubs, he urged those playing groups to play on their strengths.

“We have a lot of characters at the club so we naturally tried to show off their strengths,” the premiership defender said.

“It’s all about fun, if you want to be around the club it’s more fun rather than (the work required to play AFL football) getting you down.”
