‘He has a problem’: Leigh Matthews’ Martin concerns

AFL great Leigh Matthews says star Richmond midfielder has “a problem” ahead of his side’s marquee clash with Collingwood on Friday night.

Fitness rumours continued to swirl on Monday morning after the 27-year-old trained away from the main group at Punt Road.

Matthews told Macquarie Sports Radio Mornings if Martin was suffering from a muscle injury, painkillers couldn’t solve the issue.

He compared Martin’s current troubles with an issue of his own during his playing days.

“I remember I had a slightly strained calf and the remedy was to go to a masseur,” he said.

“Somehow I did get up the following week – if he’s suffering a muscle injury he may have to go for an extreme, deep-tissue massage or if it’s a joint thing, he may have to use a painkiller.”

“That what happens at this time of year – everything will be done to get the player up for this week’s game and we’ll worry about next week later.”
