Heath Shaw admits GWS needed time to find ‘right balance’ as a team

GWS defender Heath Shaw admits some of the early criticism about the club’s ability to play as a team may have been on the mark.

Flush with high draft picks and big name recruits, the Giants were sometimes criticised for having too many players wanting to be the star.

Speaking with Tony Leonard and Jimmy Bartel on Macquarie Sports Radio, Shaw said it was always going to take time for the club to find the right balance.

“When you start out you want to be the best player and get all the kicks, marks, handballs and kick the goals (because) if you don’t, you don’t get a game,” Shaw explained.

“I think early days at the Giants – because the group was so young – everyone was trying to do that and that synergy wasn’t there.

“But we always knew that was going to take time.

“I think now a lot of the guys, over the last two years especially, have understood that sometimes it’s not going to be your day and somebody else is going to have to pick up the slack.

“But if the team is winning and having success it makes everyone look good.

“I think we’ve got a pretty good balance with that now.”
