How rugby powerbrokers plan to make Michael Cheika’s job easier

Sunday Morning

Australian rugby powerbrokers are set to shake up the coaching structure in a bid to turn the Wallabies’ fortunes around.

The Rugby Australia board met this week under immense pressure after the Wallabies’ worst season in over half a century.

Former Wallaby Tim Horan told Macquarie Sports Radio he believes coach Michael Cheika will be allowed to narrow his focus purely onto on-field matters.

“I’m hearing there’ll be a Director of Rugby who Cheika and all the other staff members will report to,” Horan said.

“All Michael Cheika has to do now is just coach the team.

“At the moment, he’s got the doctor, physios, assistant coaches reporting to him.

“What they’re trying to do is make him accountable just for the team when they run out on the field.”

Horan said the board is also considering adding more people to the team selection panel to allow for more accountability.
