Hugh Bowman: “I need to keep a lid on it, when riding Winx”

Fresh from Winx’s extraordinary 28th straight group 1 win at Flemington last Saturday in the Turnbull Stakes, jockey Hugh Bowman is looking forward to a fourth Cox Plate win later this month.

Although her victory didn’t appear to be quite so easy with the champion mare fighting hard to bring the win home.

On the Macquarie Sports Breakfast show this morning, Mark Levy and Richard Callander asked Bowman if he was panicked at all during the race?

“I didn’t panic, it wouldn’t be much good if I did, I need to keep my lid on it. I will admit at the 1000 metre mark, I was questioning how things might unfold … but I had to wait for things to happen and of course Winx showed her champion qualities once again in the final 400 metres”.

Bowman is now looking towards guiding ride Brave Smash in The Everest this weekend at Royal Randwick, where he says “all reports from the stable is that he likes a wet track so with all the rain around this will certainly enhance his chances”.

Bowman told the show the race has really taken the racing world by storm and given an especially attractive $3 million prize on offer.
