Ian Chappell not sold on Stoinis

Is Stoinis capable of taking the next step, will he get a chance to pull on the baggy green?

Ian Chappell isn’t sold on Marcus Stoinis as the test all rounder to replace Mitchell Marsh, but could he step up should Marsh be injured or fail again?

Talking with Mark Levy and Mark “Piggy” Riddell on the Maquarie Sports Radio breakfast show this morning, the cricket legend says there is a real battle for the position.

“He’s certainly got the ability. I think probably there’s still a couple of question marks about him as a test match player. But he’s another one that will get an opportunity no to show what he can do in the Shield competition.”

And with Marsh seemingly in form after his recent Sheffield Shield Century for Western Australia, he showed no signs of poor form that saw him slump in his test series against Pakistan, notching up his 10th first class century.

Stoinis was in the frame for Ashes selection in 2017, but stepped out of the Sheffield Shield when his father, Chris, passed away following a lengthy health battle.

On whether he thinks Usman Khawaja will be fit in time for the Summer of cricket, Chappell thinks “he is track to be fit for the first test which would give the Australian’s a big boost … they really need him.”
