Ian Chappell on Smith and Warner suspensions

Pressure is mounting on Cricket Australia to cut short the bans imposed on star players Steve Smith and David Warner in the wake of the findings of the Longstaff Report released on Monday

Speaking on the Macquarie Sports Radio Breakfast show, former Test Captain Ian Chappell weighed into the debate on the surrounding the players suspensions, “I didn’t have a problem with the length of the suspensions of Smith and Warner but I can understand the players being really angry about the fact that only players have been suspended and nobody else has got it in the neck. I said when it originally happened if nobody else gets it in the neck it’s a joke. Well I think we can officially say it’s a joke.”

Chappell took a swipe at Cricket Australia’s history of passing the buck when it comes apportioning blame, “I just don’t understand how you can only suspend the players. Mind you if you look through the history of the game it’s always been the case where the administrators make the mistakes and the players cop the punishments.”
