Jon Thomson BLASTS Rally safety after Molly Taylor’s hay-bale crash
Molly Taylor has escaped injury after a horror smash at Coffs Harbour.
Taylor and co-driver Malcolm Read crashed into a bale of hay that was guarding a tree at Rally Australia, completely writing their Subaru off.
Macquarie Sports Radio’s motorsport expert Jon Thomson was absolutely scathing in his criticism of the safety standards.
“I’m not going to hold back here,” Thomson said.
“Michele Mouton, the FIA Safety Delegate, put those solid hay bales in front of big trees.
“In fact, hitting them is as bad as hitting a tree.
“The belief is the hay bale is going to be some sort of nice, benign, fluffy thing to hit. Obviously, it was very solid. It wrote off a $200,00 rally car.
“The whole point about rallying is not to hit the things on the side of the road… if you actually put an obstacle in the way and make it worse, which I think they’ve done, they need to take a good, hard look at themselves.”
Thomson said the car wasn’t even tracking to hit the tree the bale was protecting.
“It’s just ridiculous. I’m flabbergasted by it.”
