Keely Small named flag-bearer for Australian team at Youth Olympics
Australian runner Keely Small says she’s “really looking forward” to the opportunity to carry the flag at the upcoming Youth Olympics.
Small who represented Australia at the 2018 Commonwealth Games was today named to lead out the 88-strong team at the event.
The 17-year-old is the current National under 20s and under 18s record holder for the 800 metre running event.
“It’s a real honour to be representing Australia and be the flag-bearer for the team,” Small said.
“I’m really looking forward to it.
“It’s going to be a real amazing experience, it’s going to be an awesome opening ceremony and I’m really looking forward to leading out the 88 athletes we have.”
Small also said she will be targeting a medal at the competition.
“I’m going into it top-ranked, so there’s a possibility I can get a medal out of it,” Small said.
“So that’s my goal.
“I always set my standards pretty high, so coming away with a medal or even a PB (personal best) and just doing my country proud will be amazing.”
The Youth Olympics begin on October 6 in Buenos Aires with young athletes from 206 countries competing.
