Legendary Ref Bill Harrigan floored by Cecchin decision

Leading referee Matt Cecchin has been dumped for the State of Origin series opener in favour of Ashley Klein, who was demoted earlier this season for incorrectly awarding a match-deciding penalty in an NRL match.

Cecchin was a surprise omission when the NRL announced Gerard Sutton and Klein were the “form” referees and will be the men in the middle for the start of the Origin series on June 6.

Speaking with John & Beau, Legendary Referee Bill Harrigan has said it is “Rubbish!” adding “If Ashley Klein is a better referee than Cecchin, I will walk to Goulburn!”

The absence of 17-year veteran Cecchin, who was in charge of all three games in last year’s series and the past two NRL grand finals, caught many by surprise on Tuesday given his vast experience and appointment to some of rugby league’s biggest fixtures in the past few years.
