Lehmann: ‘I would have picked Glenn Maxwell’

Former Australian coach Darren Lehmann says he would have picked Glenn Maxwell in the upcoming test series against Pakistan, but sighted his ‘inconsistency’ as the reason he may have been left out this time around.

“When Glenn is hot, you need to pick him. He just needs to be a lot more consistent and make 30s and 40s when he is in a rough trot.”

Maxwell’s recent form and amount of runs made in last year’s Sheffield Shield would have been enough for Lehmann, if he was picking the squad to include Maxwell.

“I would have picked him. It was a tough one with Glenn, he made a ton the last time they toured India and he made a lot of runs in the Sheffield Shield, he plays spin quite well and it was an interesting decision.” Lehmann told Macquarie Sports Radio Melbourne Breakfast

Lehmann believes the selectors should have given Maxwell the chance to put his name up in the Australia A tour of India, where the majority of players in the squad were selected.

“Ricky Ponting summed it up pretty well, I think they should have played him in the Australia A tour and given him the chance to prove himself but they decided to go a different way.”
