Leigh Matthews fires back at suspension critics

MACQUARIE SPORTS RADIO AFTERNOONS

AFL great Leigh Matthews has hit back at suggestions Nic Naitanui’s suspension was “ridiculous and farcical”.

The star West Coast ruckman’s appeal was upheld by the AFL tribunal on Wednesday night, with the league’s legal council citing the size and weight difference between him and Port Adelaide midfielder Karl Amon – the player he tackled – as a key reason why his appeal failed.

Matthews told Afternoons he could see sympathise with those who opted to back the AFL’s decision.

“You might not agree (with the suspension) and that’s fine,” Matthews said.

“But I think it’s just one of those application things of a very strict interpretation of what is a dangerous tackle.”

“How would you like to be Karl Amon?”
