Leigh Matthews opens up on the mindset of coaching on Grand Final day

AFL legend and former Collingwood coach Leigh Matthews on opened up on the emotions of coaching on Grand Final day.

Matthews, who coached four Premiership sides (Collingwood in 1990, Brisbane in 2001, 2002 and 2003), told Mornings there was “no such thing” as coaching well but losing.

“The team cause is the only thing that matters,” he said.

“There’s no next week – up until Grand Final day, whenever the sirens goes in a game in the lead up, the first thing you think about is what I’m going to say to the team immediately after the game in the lead up to next week’s game.

“On Grand Final day, there’s no next week and if you win it, that’s what makes the moment.

“The four times I was lucky enough to coach in a Grand Final were even better than the four times I played in premiership teams.”
