Luke Lewis & Jordan Mailata give verdict on Valentine Holmes NFL code swap
Cronulla, Queensland and Australian star Valentine Holmes looks set to shock the Rugby League world and defect to the NFL
The talented winger/fullback still has one year remaining on his deal with the Sharks and then was expected to move back home to join the North Queensland Cowboys.
Former Sharks teammate Luke Lewis joined the Macquarie Sports Radio breakfast show to talk about Holmes’ potential code switch, “One thing with Val is he’s a very lucky young kid. He’s got the world at his feet to be honest. He loves his NFL and if an opportunity like that comes up you’d be mad to turn your back on it.”
Lewis is pretty confident that Holmes is on the move to the NFL, “I think it’s definitely on the cards i just don’t know how he’s going to turn his back on nearly $1 million a year. But if that’s what he wants to do if anyone can do it it’s definitely Valentine.”
He added that if Holmes were to make it in the NFL it could trigger an exodus of NRL stars keen on cracking the NFL, “I think if he does make it we’ll see a lot of other guys put their hands up and want to go over as well.
No matter the decision Holmes makes, Lewis believes Valentine will always be able to return to the NRL should his NFL dream not work out, “Perfect opportunity, perfect timing for Valentine to go over and do what he wants to do and if it doesn’t work out he can come back and still earn the money he wants to earn”
Former Souths junior and current member of the Philadelphia Eagles NFL franchise Jordan Mailata also weighed in on the debate.
Speaking to Macquarie Sports Radio producers over Instagram Live Mailata endorsed Holmes’ potential transition, “Yes he will definitely be able to make the transition. He’s a worthy athlete. There might be another Jarryd Hayne situation but honestly you can’t compare the two. They’re in two different situations. Their circumstances are different, they’re both approaching the NFL in a different way.”
