Macao – the destination with a festival for everyone!
As the 65th anniversary of the iconic Macao Grand Prix speeds into the city, we take a look at why this cosmopolitan destination should be on the grid for any holidaymaker.
The streets of Macao are revving to life for the annual Grand Prix this week. The event sees motor sports fans pack the city to see world-class drivers take the infamous tight corners and fast straights. But breath-taking excitement and colourful thrills aren’t unusual on the streets of this former Portuguese trading post. Situated in southern China and offering a unique blend of East-meets-West culture, there’s always something to see, do and discover in this vibrant city of celebrations.
A rich history
Thanks to Macao’s rich colonial history, just by taking a stroll into the UNESCO World Heritage listed Historic Centre is a party for the senses. From breathtaking historic Asian temples to European style churches, traditional street food stalls to Michelin starred haute cuisine, you’ll experience an intriguing and unique blend of old meets new in this unrivalled holiday spot.
And on top of the fascinating history, variety of cuisine and world-class shopping, this is a place that loves to celebrate! The Macanese certainly know how to put on a world-class event and the city’s calendar is packed full of festivals, exhibitions and parties. No matter what time of year you chose to visit, there’s guaranteed to be something special happening.
The city of festivals
Take the mouth-watering Macao Food Festival, held every November. The city is celebrating the Year of Gastronomy in 2018 after being made a member of the elite UNESCO Creative Cities – Gastronomy list for creativity in cuisine. The Food Festival is a showcase of Macao’s unique food scene and is a feast for the senses. Treat your tastebuds to a mixture of Asian, European and local Macanese delights at the outdoor stalls that set up close to the iconic 338-metre-high Macau Tower.
December sees the city illuminated for the Light Festival, with historical buildings given a dazzling new perspective thanks to a host of interactive light installations. It’s also when Hollywood come to town! The Macao Film Festival brings the glam and glitter of the red carpet to Asia, with official ambassador and Academy award-winner Nicolas Cage attending this celebration of the silver screen.
With the Shopping Festival and the Macao International Marathon both getting hearts racing in December too, visitors really are spoilt for choice.
The list of events continues throughout the year with Chinese New Year, the Macao Arts Festival, the Lotus Flower Festival and the International Music Festival to name just a few. And with a host of dragon boat races, fireworks displays and street parades planned as well, there’s certainly never a dull moment in Macao!
