Matthew Mitcham: “I thought Bronze would be the best I could get”

Diver Matthew Mitcham became an instant star in Australia when he beat the odds to claim Gold in the 10m Platform at the Beijing Olympics.

However he never thought it was possible.

10 years to the day since his incredible final dive that saw him score four perfect tens and claim victory over his Chinese rivals he spoke to David Morrow and Tony Leonard on Macquarie Sports Radio Mornings.

“I certainly didn’t think in my wildest dreams that I had a chance at winning Gold…. I thought Bronze would be the best I could get,” Mitcham said.

Asked when he realised that he’d done something truly special on that final dive – his 112.10 is still the highest scoring dive in Olympic history – Mitcham revealed:

“As soon as I bopped my head above the surface of the water, the whole crowd was going absolutely bananas. All of these home crowd Chinese faces were going absolutely fanatic over this dive, and I thought if the home crowd is going nuts for it then maybe it was kind of special.”
