Menzel or Townsend? Who do the Swans take?

Former cat Daniel Menzel has flown into Sydney to do a medical and then flown back over to America again.

AFL.com.au reporter Mitch Cleary joined Macquarie Sports Radio Breakfast says the former Cat is in the running for a spot on the Swans list up against 2017 Richmond Premiership player Jacob Townsend.

“He’s good enough to be on an AFL list, there’s 800 players in league footy and he’s good enough to be that way. It’s down to Dan Menzel or Jacob Townsend for the Swans, I think they’ll take 1 of those 2. Smaller ground at the SCG might suit one of those 2.” Cleary said.

Asked who he would take, 1990 Collingwood Premiership captain Tony Shaw chooses the former Cat “every minute of the day”. “I know he’s had problems, he’s a very good player, he doesn’t get a lot of the ball but he kicks goals.

Since the beginning of the 2016 season, Menzel has played 50 AFL games and kicked 100 goals, Shaw has implored his former side to consider rookie listing Menzel. “I am gobsmacked that other clubs aren’t knocking at his door. If you’re talking class I’m going Dan Menzel everyday. Even a side like Collingwood, you know you’re going to get him for under the odds because he can play the game.”

Cleary sees the Swans and the SCG as the perfect fit for Daniel Menzel due to the dimensions of the ground and the style of football the Swans play. “I don’t mind it at a smaller SCG, if he can kick you 2 goals a game and provide a nice foil for Sam Reid & Lance Franklin plus allow Tom McCartin a bit more time to develop, I don’t mind it for a couple of years.”

According to Mitch, delisted Saint Nathan Freeman is set to be thrown a lifeline by the Gold Coast Suns however the concern is surrounding his shoulder not his hamstring.
