Michael Maguire: I can’t wait to get to the Tigers

Wests Tigers fans get excited!

The future of the club is looking bright with the Premiership winning coach Michael Maguire taking over the top job, following the departure of outgoing coach Ivan Cleary.

Despite dealing with the disappointment of a 20-14 defeat to England in the second rugby league Test over the weekend, the current New Zealand coach was upbeat over his appointment and can’t wait for kickoff on the 2019 NRL season.

Speaking with Mark Levy and Mark Riddell this morning on the Breakfast show, Maguire was asked whether he was itching to get home and looking forward to taking over as head coach at the Tigers, Maguire said “I can’t wait to get into it, I’m really looking forward to working with everyone at the Wests Tigers … they’ve got a lot of youth coming through and they’ve got a great nursery. I played for that jersey. I’m big on the jersey and that’s something I want to grow with obviously myself coming through the Wests Tigers.”

After weeks of speculation and rumours surrounding the so-called NRL coaching “merry-go-round”, did Maguire feel pressure from the fallout of Tigers fans unhappy with Cleary’s decision to move to the Panthers, Maguire said that he’s really glad that Ivan Cleary decided to move on as it has given him “the opportunity to jump on one of the biggest clubs in the game.”
