Newcastle Jets off to China and Spain over the pre-season

The Newcastle Jets were the surprise packet of the last A-League season, going from last position to the Grand Final.

Pre-season is underway, and the side is on its way to China for a tournament, then onto Spain for more football.

Newcastle coach Ernie Merrick spoke with Julian King on his way to the airport to take off to China.

“We’re not taking our strongest squad. We’re very much using it as a pre-season preparation game and if we do qualify for the Champions League at the end of the season it’ll be a good experience for them.”

Then it’s back to Australia to hopefully go one better in the A-League, although this time round, the Jets won’t be able to fly under the radar.

“I think teams will play differently against us, they won’t play such an open game. It’ll be a much tougher year. To retain 10 out of the 11 grand final starting players is an achievement.”
