Penrith legend Greg Alexander on Ivan Cleary coming to the Panthers
The Panthers season was thrown into disarray when coach Anthony Griffin was controversially sacked with only a couple of games remaining in the season and the team just outside the top 4. Rookie coach Cameron Ciraldo was elevated into the top job as a caretaker for the remainder of the season.
Since Griffin’s departure from the club, a host of other NRL coaches have been linked to the coaching role. The contender that cause the most controversy was current Tigers coach and father of star Panthers halfback Ivan Cleary.
Despite Phil Gould denying a legitimate approach had been made to cleary, the rumours linking him to a switch to the club have not died down.
Speaking to Mark Levy and Mark Riddell on the Macquarie Sports Radio breakfast show Panthers board member Greg Alexander said, “Cameron Ciraldo is the coach at the moment. We’ll just see how things unfold in the coming weeks. There was a bit of talk with Ivan a couple of months ago but not much since”.
The Panthers have all but confirmed the signing of Nathan Cleary to a multi-year, big money deal.
