QLD State of Origin legend backs Billy Slater over controversial award
Queensland State of Origin legend Petero Civoniceva says he’s happy fullback Billy Slater was awarded the Wally Lewis medal.
Slater was controversially awarded the State of Origin player of the series award despite playing just two of the three games, and playing on the losing side.
Selectors Laurie Daley, Darren Lockyer and Mal Meninga stand by their vote, which is based on a 4-2-3-1 system.
The system means each selector votes for their top four players after each game and the player who polls the most votes from the three games wins the medal.
According to Fairfax’s Andrew Webster, NSW coach Brad Fittler was filthy.
“No, I don’t see a silver lining. The silver lining would be if the Wally Lewis Medal was hanging around someone’s neck in here. Terrible. Terrible … Who chooses it? Seriously. Seriously. Seriously. Seriously… Why does Billy need that? He’s got everything [from the game] already. Ridiculous,” Fittler said.
But Civoniceva has told Macquarie Sports Radio’s Clinton Maynard and Craig Willis it was great for Slater to retire from State of Origin on that note.
