Rebels CEO reveals how close the club came to folding

Melbourne Rebels CEO Baden Stephenson says the club came “extremely close” to being wound up last year.

The ARU announced in September 2017 that the Western Force would exit the competition but for much of the year, the Rebels’ future was in doubt as Super Rugby looked to cut back the number of teams.

Stephenson opened up about a crucial meeting which took place just weeks before the club was given a lifetime heading into the 2018 season.

“We weren’t sure which way it was going to go,” Stephenson said.

“I distinctly remember a meeting on the Monday night with a couple of board members and the narrative was that if we survive until Friday, we might be OK.”

“It wasn’t a great time but thankfully the decision went our way and we’ve built from there.”
