Piggy’s thoughts on Shaun Johnson’s release may surprise you

Shaun Johnson is the latest NRL star to jump on the off season merry-go-round having requested and received a release from the final year of his contract with the New Zealand Warriors

Upon his release, Warriors CEO Cameron George said “The New Zealand Warriors have no regrets about showing Club great Shaun Johnson the door”, accusing him of failing to live up to his $1 million a season price tag.

Former NRL star and co-host of the Macquarie Sports Radio breakfast show, Mark ‘Piggy’ Riddell weighed in on the controversial comments from the Warriors CEO saying, “I’ve got no problem with it. I’ve got no problem with his comments. I think he’s right. I don’t want to bag Shaun Johnson but I think what he says there is right. Cameron George is entitled to say ‘We’re not getting the bang for our buck, he’s not winning the big games for us. He’s not putting us in the picture (for finals).’

Riddell recalled a moment in 2018 where the Warriors season was on the line and Johnson failed to step up, “I’m thinking back to that finals game against the Penrith Panthers in the first week where they we bundled out the back door. Everyone was waiting for Shaun Johnson to do something and he doesn’t do it. Not on a consistent basis.”

“And you feel like you’re almost a broken record when you do those games (Warriors games) and you genuinely feel bad, well I do, because you don’t want to harp on a player like that but unfortunately with a big price tag comes big expectations and off the back of that they feel, the New Zealand Warriors, that they don’t want to go any further with him and they want to go in a new direction”, Riddell continued.
