Ryan Harris defends Michael Clarke

Michael Clarke vs Gerard Whateley is the biggest fight in the country outside of Horn v Mundine

After Whateley’s stinging remarks blaming Clarke for the ball tampering saga in South Africa the barbs have been flying thick and fast.

Former Australian fast bowler Ryan Harris joined the Macquarie Sports Radio breakfast show to defend his former teammate, “In my mind Michael was a very good Captain. For someone to insinuate that he’s the reason behind that, well if that’s the case, then I’ll take responsibility as well because in a team, yes he (Clarke) leads but his players are in control of their own actions.”

Harris also defended the way the Clarke instructed his players to behave whilst he was Captain, “We played hard. He’d always say go out there and do what you’ve got to do to get into the contest but if you go personal, we wouldn’t even think of using sandpaper, but that’s too far. He’d always say that. You don’t go personal, you don’t insult someone but you do what you have to do to get in the contest with the batsman of the bowler.”

“The funny thing is we were winning Test matches so no one was really talking about it. As soon as you start losing people start trying to find the reasons why”, Harris added.
