Shaw | Fix the AFL draft!
Collingwood legend Tony Shaw has called the AFL to give the draft a complete overhaul.
In recent years the format of the draft has changed dramatically from it being up on the Gold Coast to the top 10 being pre-done in secret and then unveiled as pick 10, down to number 1. This year the draft ran across 2 days with the first round picks the night before the remainder of the draft was complete, drawing criticism from many of the games greats.
Speaking on Macquarie Sports Radio Breakfast the 1990 Premiership captain said “We need to fix it. It’s along the lines of entertainment on Grand Final day and also the Brownlow Medal. It is the most boring thing of all time, if you’ve planned for the whole year, you would know what you’re going to do next.”
“To watch it, it’s like pulling teeth out, for it to go over 2 days, I just think it’s too long and it’s not fair on these youngsters to sit there and wait. It’s on a par with boredom of the AFL Grand Final entertainment and with the Brownlow.” said Shaw
Asked about what he would like to see and how he would like the draft to be broadcast, Shaw offered this solution “Let’s make this into a 1 hour, 2 hour special. Don’t do it over 2 days which I think is cruel for young players 17/18 years of age. Surely the first 20 can be done prior and locked in, in secret. It would make it a lot easier for the broadcasts to sell it as an entire TV package.”
