Starting positions a solution to congestion: Matthews

AFL great and 3AW commentator Leigh Matthews has endorsed starting position at a centre bounces as a way of easing congestion in Australian Rules Football.

The four-time premiership coach told Afternoons the AFL may have to look at altering the rules in the coming years.

‘We’re talking about starting a certain number of players in certain positions,” Matthews said.

“I see the practical problems of doing it at every stoppage but if you do it at centre bounces, it’s not a radical change I don’t think.

“A lot of people like putting their heads in the sand (when not wanting to change the rules).”
