Stoddart reveals his motivation to play footy

Ryley Stoddart’s doing it for his mate.

The first-year Sydney Swans player, who was drafted at pick 53 in the 2017 AFL Draft, debuted on Saturday in a 18-point win over Brisbane and continues to dedicate his career to his best friend Cooper Ratten – the son of Hawthorn assistant coach Brett.

Ratten was tragically killed in a car crash in 2015 and Stoddart told Afternoons his memory will live on as the talented 18-year-old continues to build his career at the Swans.

“We did everything together and played footy together. We were always with each other,” he said.

“He was my first friend when I moved primary schools.

“When he passed, it rocked me but I hope I made him proud when I debuted on the weekend.”
