Supercars Championship within reach for Jamie Whincup

The race for the Supercars Championship is heating up following Triple Eight’s domination at Sandown 500.

Now within reach for third-placed Jame Whincup, he says the team did a fantastic job preparing during the week.

“We rolled out of the truck nice and quick, and kept improving the car as the week went on,” Whincup told Weekend Afternoons.

“We went down there, put in our best effort and to come away with the one, two, three was fantastic.”

Whincup along with co-driver Paul Dumbrell took out first position ahead of Shane van Gisbergen and Earl Bamber, and Craig Lowndes and Steven Richards.

It meant Championship leader Van Gisbergen was only able to extend his lead to 55 points.

Whincup is still unsure what teammate Dumbrell will do next season, and says he is open to the idea of partnering up with an old friend.

“I certainly would love to team up with Lowndes again.”

A couple of weeks out from Bathurst 1000, Whincup says full preparations will begin next week.

“Bathurst being the holy grail we make sure we leave no stone unturned.

“Any parts on the car that need to be replaced yearly usually get changed over just before Bathurst so the car is absolutely at full strength come the biggest race of the year for us.”

Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 takes place from October 4 – 7.
