Everest barrier draw

After days of controversy – The Everest barrier draw has finally been drawn – in secrecy.

Racing officials kept the results of the barrier draw under wraps, before releasing it to the public in a “spectacular” light show on the sails of the Sydney Opera House.

The event was marred by protesters shining lights towards the sails in protest of the decision to allow advertising of the sport on the iconic landmark.

However, with the formalities taken care of, we can now look ahead to the big race on Saturday.

Here’s how it panned out.

Fairfax Racing writer Chris Roots told Macquarie Sports Radio how the barrier draw impacted the favourites for the race.

“REDZEL – last year’s winner is into equal favourite with VEGA MAGIC and TRAPEZE ARTIST now,” Roots said.

“Interestingly, US NAVY FLAG – the Irish horse has come out here, but doesn’t like wet tracks, I can’t believe that.

“It drew barrier three, it’s been the big mover in betting.

“It’s a race where you can have a bet on your favourite horse and you’re going to get a good price.

“Half the field are under $8.50!”
