The Race Across the World: Remembering the world’s greatest motor-marathon
In 1968, almost 100 audacious drivers set out on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
Setting off from London, the marathon drive would finish over 10,000 miles away in Sydney.
Motorsport icon John Smailes covered the journey for the Sydney Daily Telegraph and, 50 years later, he’s brought the story back to life.
His new book, Race Across the World, recounts the most gruelling test of driver and vehicle ever undertaken.
Smailes told Macquarie Sports Radio it was a “triumph of organisation”.
“It went through 11 countries – many of whom were at war with each other!”
