Sharks coach Shane Flanagan has revealed NFL-bound Valentine Holmes will give Cronulla the first chance to re-sign him, should he return to rugby league.

Holmes walked out on the club with a year left on his contract to take a punt on a career in the United States.

Flanagan told Clinton Maynard and Sam Stove on Macquarie Sports Radio it’s taken him a few days to get over it.

“I was pretty shocked earlier in the week, I was expecting Val to come after he got back from his overseas trip and come and talk to us about possibly leaving at the end of the year and going to Townsville.

“He came in a sort of said he was off to the U.S. and wanted to go know” Flanagan said.

When asked how Holmes walked out on his agreement, Flanagan said NRL contracts don’t hold much weight in America, and that they didn’t want to take legal action against him.

However he said if Holmes had switched to another code in Australia, it’d be another story.

Flanagan also revealed Holmes has promised to talk to the Sharks first, should he come back to the NRL.
