‘Warning signs’ as Ablett fails to fire for Geelong
Matt Thompson sees “warning signs” in Gary Ablett’s performance on the weekend.
Ablett was well below his best in Geelong’s heavy defeat to Essendon on Saturday, picking up just 17 disposals and laying one tackle.
And the Macquarie Sports Radio host said it looks like the beginning of the end.
“I always thought Gary Ablett going back to Geelong was a big risk, and it’s proving that way,” Matt said on Monday.
“We’ll still see signs of brilliance, but I don’t think we can expect the Gary Ablett of old.
“This is the Gary Ablett retirement plan that we’re seeing unfold at the Cattery, and that’s something Geelong fans are going to have to accept.”
But Matt said Ablett was not alone in underperforming against the Bombers.
“It was not a great day for Geelong… almost an embarrassing day,” he said.
Ablett has played five games this season, averaging 29 disposals and two tackles.
