“We need to keep our best referees here” – Riddell on Cecchin

After a tumultuous 2018 season respected referee Matt Cecchin announced he would be quitting the NRL

New Head of Football in the NRL, Graham Annesley has made it his mission to try and convince Cecchin to change his mind.

Speaking on the Macquarie Sports Radio Breakfast show, former NRL star Mark Riddell weighed in on the issue, “We all see how good a referee Matt Cecchin is. He did announce that he is going to leave the NRL and possibly head over to the English Super League to get away from the drama that’s been here for the last 12-18 months. We hopefully won’t lose him because he is one of our best if no the best referees in the game and we need to keep our best referees here (in the NRL).”

Riddell sighted Cecchin’s ability to command respect from the players as a reason for his standing as one of the games best referees, “The players all do respect him. He’s got a really good rapport with all the players in the game and it will be very, very disappointing if we don’t see Matty Cecchin running around in the NRL any more.”
